Depending on what you pair it with, a knitted polo shirt can have either a casual or more formal character, combining just as well with a pair of casual trousers as it does with a suit, where it dials down the formality just a notch. The soft, thin knit makes the knitted polo a singularly comfortable choice that creates a discreetly elegant drape and given the model’s almost endless versatility, there is room in most wardrobes for several different colours. In this article, we suggest three diverse looks, all featuring a classic knitted polo.
Casual Tone-on-Tone
Dressing tone-on-tone in shades of navy makes for an understated and sombre look, even with relatively casual components. Together with a pair of well-chosen shoes, this look combines relaxed comfort with high levels of style.
Coat & Suit Trousers
Tucked into a pair of well-cut trousers with a front crease and somewhat higher waist, a knitted polo shirt takes on a slightly more sophisticated air, without losing its casual edge. More adventurous types might like to choose trousers with a subtle check pattern, while the minimalists among us would likely prefer a plain pair. Corduroy trousers with a similar cut are yet another excellent match, with the texture of the corduroy adding a visually compelling touch.
A Casual Suit with a Subtle Contrast
Worn with a casual suit in flannel, for example, a light knitted polo makes a particularly well-dressed impression. Complete the look with a pair of suede shoes in a lighter shade and a quilted gilet to further soften the formal look of the suit. This look is also ideal for those wanting to find ways to wear a suit more regularly without feeling overdressed.
