The Castañer family has been making espadrilles for generations, beginning with Rafael Castañer, born in the 1770s. Since then, many generations followed in his footsteps and in 1927, the Castañer brand was formally established by Luis Castañer and cousin Tomàs Serra.
The espadrille is a classic casual shoe of Mediterranean origin, where it has been worn for hundreds of years. In the 1960s and 70s, the espadrille experienced something of a revolution, when a new generation of Castañer decided to inject a considerable dose of colour and fashion. The espadrille was soon to be found in the window displays of many well-established fashion houses.
